My Minecraft Server is Lagging?

Lag is a frustrating thing that happens on a lot of servers, this article will help you identify what is creating lag and how you can prevent lag.

Reasons for Lag

Too many mobs/items/players and not enough RAM.
You are too far away from your server.
Too many worlds running on your server without sufficient RAM.
Errors are spamming in your console.
Too many plugins running on your server and not enough RAM.

So the main reason for Lag is Ram, a lot of people get confused with Ram & Storage they are two different things.

Storage - Is where you store your server files (e.g plugins, worlds). Such as a hard drive where you store your computer files.
Ram - It's temporary storage like (memory) if you have 20 people on your server at the time spawning mobs everywhere with a low amount of ram this would make your server laggy.

Things To Do First

Check your Ram Usage
Multicraft is not the best at tracking ram usage. However in-game you are able to track it way more accurately, if you do have essentials installed & if you run the command "/mem". It would tell you how much free ram you have available for your server. Here is an example below.

28.08 08:37:04 [Server] INFO The End "world_the_end": 529 chunks, 10 entities, 0 tiles.
28.08 08:37:04 [Server] INFO Nether "world_nether": 529 chunks, 31 entities, 5 tiles.
28.08 08:37:04 [Server] INFO World "world": 529 chunks, 128 entities, 36 tiles.
28.08 08:37:04 [Server] INFO Free memory: 353 MB.
28.08 08:37:04 [Server] INFO Allocated memory: 1,024 MB.
28.08 08:37:04 [Server] INFO Maximum memory: 1,024 MB.
28.08 08:37:04 [Server] INFO Current TPS = 20
28.08 08:37:04 [Server] INFO Uptime: 8 days 3 hours 26 minutes
28.08 08:37:04 [Server] INFO CONSOLE issued server command: /mem

If your free memory is below 10-30% of your max memory. Your server may be experiencing lag due to low memory. You could contact our support team to (temporarily) upgrade your ram amount to see if you do possible need to upgrade for free.

Installing ClearLag
ClearLag is a plugin and is great for reducing lag and is very configurable and is recommended for any server.
ClearLag can be found on Bukkit here: https://dev.bukkit.org/projects/clearlagg

Once you have ClearLag installed you can run the command "/lagg check" in the game to see how many entities you have on your server

If you are running a small server anything over the value "500" may possibly be the reason for your lag.

If you do have a high number of entities, run the command "/lagg clear" in and "lagg killmobs" in-game. This will remove the lag causing entities from your server

Latency Lag (Checking your ping)
Lag can also occur when you're a fair distance away from your server, the tutorial below will tell you how to check your ping.

You can check your latency with a server by logging onto Minecraft and add the server you want to test to your list of servers.
When it's added there will be a small icon in the top right on the server field just above a number of slots the server holds.
If you hover the icon it will tell you the ping of the server.

Fast Ping: <100ms
Medium Ping: 100-250ms
Slow Ping: 250-500ms
Laggy Ping: >500ms

Please contact us if you would like your server to be moved.

Remove Plugins
You may want to consider uninstalling plugins on your Multicraft control panel, most servers have plugins that are rarely used, the number of plugins you have on your server will definitely affect your lag.

Low Ram
The more players and active processes that are running on your server create lag, you may want to consider purchasing more Ram if you have a lot of players/active processes.
